Our understanding of neurogenerative disorders and neuroinflammation has greatly expanded in the last few years. We are seeing an increased diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and autism in pediatrics and alzheimers related dementia in adults with increased prevalence likely due to aging demographics. Emerging disease entities like neurologic lyme, bartonella, chronic inflammatory response syndrome from biotoxins, mycotoxins and our food supply can all potentiate neurologic symptoms. There have been numerous trials looking for a pharmaceutical approach to these diseases, even though we have already had methods to address these issues which are supported by evidenced based medicine. Given that autism and lyme neuroinflammation are emerging fields with conflicting studies, there are a small few who have the answers to symptoms from these neurologic entities. As a result we are seeing a rapid expansion in alternative medicine approaches to these diseases, many with unproven results.
At Mid-Atlantic Health institute we use a comprehensive approach to several of these disease entities.
Many mechanisms of brain injury and inflammation share similarities. Thankfully with the advent of NeuroQuant Brain MRI and QEEG/Evoked Related Potential, we now have a better understanding of the underlying abnormalities and how to better treat them. This goes beyond our understanding of the brain using Brain SPECT, PET, and fMRI.
Whereas NeuroQuant will show the areas of grey and whiter matter hyperinflamamtion and help rule out atrophy in early cognitive decline and forms of dementia, and asymmetry in concussion, QEEG/ERP analysis further helps us decide on how and where to treat he brain. Long standing Lyme, mold/CIRS, PANS/PANDAS and mTBI/concussion nearly all cause underlying dipole abnormalities seen on ERP analysis that will not be corrected by just using an antibiotic, mold binder, or rest. The brain may need to rewiring of connections and network hubs using neurofeedback or neurostimulation, reduced inflammation with various IV supplements like IV lipids, Nad+ supplements, improvement of thyroid and hormone levels, neurophotomodulation with various light wavelengths and pulsed frequencies, regenerative techniques to help the severely injured, and even at times oxygen therapy with PEMF/tACS/tDCS/tRNS.
